So, during my time in ‘isolation’ or ‘lockdown’ or whatever you’d like to call it (I call it being sensible and doing the right thing and just staying indoors) I put up some posts on my social media asking if any suppliers would like to send some products for me to photograph.
Since all weddings have been postponed to a later date I’ve had a lot of time on my hands – and well, I wanted something to keep me busy and keep my creative juices flowing.
Rebecca (owner of RT Cakes) got in touch and asked me if I fancied photographing some cakes and cookies. Of course she contacted the right person here – I love absolutely anything sweet. Rebecca being a wedding cake maker herself I was happy and delighted to help someone in the industry.
So let’s start off with Rebecca. The products were beautifully packaged when they arrived – they had beautiful little ribbons adorning them, and the smell as I opened the box was enough for me to want to eat them all in one go! It’s clear that Rebecca has a talent for small details and making things pretty whilst keeping it classy (perfect for a fine art photographer like myself, we love the details).
My task was to photograph the products in a way that would suit both mine and Rebecca’s branding. As this was something we’d both be benefiting from (me, giving me something to do and more content to post during this time, and giving Rebecca beautiful images to use for her website and social media) I had to find a fine balance of working so that it would suit both brands. Initially I started off using some of my vintage trays (I take these to weddings with me, you may have seen these in my photographs) however I felt the colour didn’t suit. I then began thinking back to what inspires me with my photography (and sort of where it began), and it hit me. Flowers. Let’s combined the cakes and treats with flowers!
Whenever I photograph a wedding I always take my styling boards (this is what I photographed these on) and some props to add extra prettiness to detail photographs. For this particular project, I knew my pink linen board would be perfect for the creamy tones of both the flowers and the cakes.
